My research focused on phase transitions within colloidal system, which is a crucial branch of experimental soft condensed matter physics. Micrometer-sized colloidal particles can be viewed as large atoms with tailorable sizes, shapes and interactions. These building blocks can assemble into extremely rich structures and phases, in which the thermal motions of particles can be directly imaged and tracked using optical microscopy. Hence, colloids are excellent model systems for studying phase transitions, especially for the poorly understood kinetic and non-equilibrium microscale processes. The research topics involved in my thesis are listed below:
- Long ranged attraction and phase behaviors within a colloidal system
- Mode analysis and phonon behaviors of colloidal crystals with a free surface
- Fabrication of ellipsoidal and polyhedron colloidal particle
- Photolithography of microstructures
